One of the most popular and easy to create snacks are rice krispie treats. The recipe is simple and it can be altered to suit anyone's tastes, even becoming a gourmet treat with the right additions.

The basic recipe for these treats requires crisped rice, any brand will do though many prefer the Kellogg's original, marshmallows such as Jet puffed, though again, any brand will do just fine, and a generous amount of butter. For every 10 oz. package of marshmallows use 3-4 tablespoon of butter and 6 cups of crisped rice. Simply heat the butter on medium heat and then add the marshmallows to the liquefied butter stirring constantly until they are melted as well. Turn off the heat and quickly mix the crisped rice into the marshmallow goo. Now it can be spread out onto a cookie sheet or pan to dry before cutting it into squares and serving.

With a little bit of creativity these simple rice krispie treats can be altered to create delicious combinations of tastes. One simple addition is a few spoonfuls of peanut butter added to the goo before the crisps are added. This gives the treat a delicious peanut butter flavor that is a perfect addition to chocolate snacks. Chocolate chips can be spread out on the pan over the hot peanut butter crisps and allowed to melt on top before cutting into small edible sized pieces. To make an even more unique treat roll the peanut butter chocolate crisps into a roll, let cool and harden and then cut into slices. The chocolate will be swirled around these delicious rice krispie treats and they are still simple enough for children to create and gourmet enough to be served at a dessert shop.

When helping children cook in the kitchen it is important to follow a few important safety tips. Never let kids handle hot pans, make sure the child washes their hands before handling food, and let them wear an apron to make the parents life easier later on. Cooking in the kitchen is exciting to children and can be safe and clean as well. A child can measure out all the ingredients, mix them in a bowl if necessary, and clean off the spoons and bowl afterwards. For rice krispie treats a child can put all the ingredients into the pot and carefully stir it under close supervision. Using a spatula they can spread the hot mixture onto a pan and once it cools an adult can cut them into squares with a knife. Then the best part occurs, the enjoyment of these delicious treats.
