Popcorn makers come in many different shapes and styles that allow cooking of corn kernels in a few different ways. The first method of cooking involved heating the kernels in a wire contraption over an open fire. This often resulted in an uneven, halfway burnt final product but it was easy and effective. Native Americans used similar methods for thousands of year.

Cast-iron pots make excellent popcorn makers and this is likely how our grandparents enjoyed this treat. Oil and kernels were added to a large cast iron pot with a lid, after a few moments the pot would be full of freshly popped corn. This process still left a lot of kernels un-popped and had a tendency to burn the popped kernels if not taken off at just the right time.

Today's popcorn makers are typically electric powered hot air type makers. The kernels are heated with circulating hot air which does not require any hot oil making the process much safer and common for at home use. Typically there is a way for the popped kernels to escape directly into a serving bowl. Industrial cookers still use hot oils and butter to heat the kernels evenly.
