FAQ

When was popcorn invented?
Popcorn has been eaten for thousands of years. Native Americans, Aztecs, Incas, and many Mesoamerican civilizations cooked and ate popped corn, though they called corn "maize". Europeans observed what was going on and adopted the techniques with added technologies such as metal to make the process easier and more consistent, though it wasn't until the 1900's that the modernized popcorn maker appeared. Before then wire meshes filled with kernels were placed over open flames, or cast iron pots were used. Today's popcorn makers typically use circulated hot air to evenly heat and pop the kernels, though oil immersed popcorn makers are still used in movie theaters today.

Is popcorn healthy?
In it's purest form, popcorn is very healthy. This means avoiding all that extra butter and salt that is commonly added to popcorn for a more delicious flavor. Without any flavorings popcorn is high in fiber and contains no sodium and sugars making it an excellent snack for children and adults, especially adults with dietary restrictions such as diabetics have. For children, just be sure they are big enough that the popcorn does not pose a choking hazard. Four years old and older is generally considered safe. Movie theater popcorn is notoriously unhealthy and should be avoided if that is a concern.

What other healthy snacks are there besides popcorn?
There are many healthy treats enjoyed by children and adults. Raisins are a big one, as are many fruits. If you are craving salty treats though try olives, hummus, rice crackers, nuts, or pretzels. If you are craving sweets try honey graham crackers, fruit leathers, or raw fruit. Eating healthy snacks can encourage overall healthy eating habits which will ensure strong healthy bodies and a longer more enjoyable life.
