Cotton candy is many a child's favorite treat, and it is something that is almost impossible to make at home. It is simply spun sugar, nothing else besides food coloring has to be added, but the quality of the sugar determines how it will taste. Before machines spun the candy it was rare and labor intensive, but during the 1904 world fair it was a huge success.
Though first called fairy floss, it was commonly referred to as cotton candy during and after the 1920s. In Australia it is still called fairy floss though it is still the same confection. A typical serving has only 100 calories even though it is pure sugar.
Cotton candy is often sold in bags and can be found in grocery stores around the world. At public gatherings and fairs it is often spun by a combination of hand and machine. For many children it is just as interesting to watch being made as it is to eat. It is sticky and sweet, dissolving in the mouth in most cases.
